South Saskatchewan River Valley

In 2018, Corman Park undertook a two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic modelling and mapping study of the South Saskatchewan River valley south of the City of Saskatoon, to determine what areas are floodway and flood fringe. Areas of flood fringe may be developed subject to conditions, while floodway lands are restricted from development. Statements of Provincial Interest, which are provincial land use regulations that the R.M. must follow, guide how floodway and flood fringe are calculated.

Barr Engineering was selected as the consultant for the study. The R.M. successfully applied for funding under the National Disaster Mitigation Program – Stream 2: Flood Mapping, administered by Public Safety Canada. The federal government paid for 50% of the project costs and the provincial government paid the other 50% through the Flood Damage Reduction Program.

The modelling in the final study determined that some areas are considered flood fringe based on provincial regulations, however many areas have been identified as floodway where no development can occur. Next steps include flood related policy updates to Corman Park planning documents.

Corman Park also completed a feasibility study for flood mitigation related to three different levee options to mitigate flood risks.
